  SPRING 2000 SEASON IN SUMMARY

The Spring 2000 season was one in which MSC Strikers often played beautiful soccer; and in virtually every game, were almost always the dominant team. Unfortunately, time and again, the team failed to transform their dominance into victories.

MSC Strikers, with three guest players, played in the Potomac Memorial Day Tournament, May 27-29, reaching the Semi-Finals before losing in a penalty shoot out.  Congratulations to the team for playing so well, and commiserations on the final result.

Strikers 1 Freestate Storm 2

Strikers 3  Lee-Mt. Vernon Yellow Jackets 2
Semi Final: Strikers 1 Alex Lions 1 (Alex Lions won penalty-shoot out.)
[In the Final, Alex Lions lost to the other MSC team, MSC X-Treme, coached by Errol Brathwaite.]

Congratulations to the MSC Strikers for their excellent win in the preliminary round of the Maryland State Cup. Commiserations to the Strikers for failing to make the Semi-Finals of the Maryland State Cup. They had an excellent victory against La Plata Blackawks, before going down to the two NCSL Division 1 teams,  Potomac Cougars and BSU Warthogs.

MSC Strikers play in the next round of the Maryland State Cup on Saturday, April 29 and Sunday, April 30.  Strikers  play in a "round robbin" against Potomac Cougars,  BSU Wathogs and  La Plata Blackhawks.   (Game Times have been posted.)

MSC Strikers play in the Potomac Memorial Day Tournament. Saturday, May 27 and Sunday, May 28.

The Spring 2000 season  sees one new arrival, and two departures, to the team.  Welcome to Federico Jellineck. Goodbye and thanks to Dylan Dempsey and Justin Grodman.

In the winter off-season, Strikers played in the first session of Corner Kick.   In the pre-season warm up,  MSC Strikers won an indoor tournament.

SPRING 2000 RESULTS

MSC Strikers opened the season against SWYA Galaxy, losing 0-2, conceding two goals in the last few minutes after dominating much of the game, especially the second half. (Half-Time 0-0)

In their second game, MSC Strikers won 3-0 against STER Pride (half-time 2-0).

In their opening game in the Maryland State Cup, Strikers defeated GSPAA Wolfpack 7-0.

In their latest game, played April 17,   MSC Strikers lost 1-2 against SEVP Galaxy, conceding goals in the first five minutes and last minute of the game, after dominating virtually all of the game.    Unquestionably,  another very tough result  for the Strikers.  The players put so much effort into the game and "deserved" so much better than the final result.

STRIKERS RELEGATED

MSC Strikers tied 1-1 vs Damascus Tornadoes, Sunday, October 31. After a scoreless first-half, in which Strikers had several chances to take the lead, Tornadoes scored early in the second half, with Strikers equalizing a few minutes from the end.
This tie, ensures that regardless of other results or how the Strikers and other teams fares next Sunday, MSC Strikers are (briefly) returning to Division 3 (thus ensuring that the Strikers get another chance to win the Division 3 Championship!)
All the parents will agree that they are very proud of the players of this team, and that, while it may sound a little crazy, with just a little better luck, we would be leaving this division - from the other direction: up into Division 1!

STRIKERS (1)1 STAFFORD STORM (1)3

On Sunday, October 24, MSC STRIKERS lost 1-3 against Stafford Storm. On a cold blustery day,   Stafford took the lead after about ten minutes, before Strikers equalized from a free kick, shortly before the interval.  In the second half, Stafford scored twice to end up winning 3-1, leaving Strikers in a rather precarious position.

MSC STRIKERS TIE 2:2 Vs SWYA GALAXY

On Sunday, October 17, MSC Strikers tied 2:2   against SWYA Galaxy. Galaxy took the lead early in the first half. Strikers equalized before half time. In the second half, Strikers went ahead before Galaxy got their equalizer five minutes from time. A few minutes earlier, Galaxy had hit the bar from the penalty spot.

TOURNAMENT UPDATE

Laura - Your team (MSC Strikers) ended up in second place. Someone
will contact your team about getting the trophies
- Carol

From Laura to the Tournament organizers:
Hi, Thanks for all your hard work at the tournament this weekend. Sorry the weather didn't cooperate. I wanted to let our players and parents know what the standings were after Saturday's games-we left before the last game was played. We think we came in 2nd and that would be fun to let them know at practice tomorrow.
As you begin planning for next year's tournament, and you probably already are, there are 2 things that happened to us that -you may want to consider. Our team has the player with the broken finger who was not allowed to play the 2nd game on Sat. If we had known about bringing a doctors note we would have had a happier team.
Also we had an -8:00am game on Sunday which meant that our families had to leave their homes around 6:15. It would have been great if we would have known about the cancellation by 6:00am.
Thanks for all your help. Laura Engler, U12 MSC

Subj: 1999 MACDT: Algonkian Regional Park Site Conditions

I'm Carol Peters, site coordinator for the fields at Algonkian Regional Park (ARP). Your team is scheduled to compete there for all regular games. Championship matches will be played elsewhere.
Many of you may know that ARP lies in the natural floodplain of the Potomac River. Although the river hasn't flooded the fields, the flatness of the terrain does not encourage quick run-off after heavy rainfalls. Accumulation over recent weeks has caused some puddles and soggy areas to form.
The fields have been getting a lot of attention and are expected to be in good shape for play. However, some areas between or adjacent to the fields remain soft and a few puddles exist. Since these may be hidden by the lush grass (a benefit of the floodplain locale), your families and friends may want to bring waterproof boots or shoes rather than simply sneakers or running shoes. An extra pair of socks would be a good addition to one's kit as well.
Since the forecast for the coming days is for sunny skies, the conditions will only be getting better.
Look forward to seeing you all this weekend. Hope you have fun and good luck to you all.
        Carol

COLUMBUS DAY TOURNAMENT

MSC STRIKERS took part in the Sterling Youth Soccer Association's 20th Annual Mid-Atlantic Columbus Day Tournament on Saturday, October 9 and Sunday, October 10. The games were at Algonkian Regional Park, near Northern Virginia Community College-Loudon Campus. Despite winning both games, Strikers finished as runners up, because of a rain cancellation.

CORNER KICK MATTERS

There are two eight-week sessions.   The first session runs from November 13-January 30, 2000. (There will be no games, the weekends of December 25 and January 1. )
The second session, if we decide to do it, runs from February 5 to April 2.     (It scarcely needs stating that should  there be a conflict between the final Corner Kick game and a NCSL game or tournament, the Corner Kick game will not be the priority.)
Apart for turning up for the games - 15-20 minutes before start time (which are usually on Sunday afternoons), there is no other time commitment. We have no weekday soccer practices. (This lack of practice/training does obviously handicap us slightly against those teams who do train during the week indoors, but basically we've managed to more than get by.)
Generally, the games are a lot of fun; it keeps the players semi-fit and thinking of soccer; and it keeps the team spirit strong.  Last year, playing in the competitive division, we placed 3rd the first session (but were top goalscorers!); and we won the division, the second session.
Games are 6-a-side with unlimited substitutions, and everyone basically plays the same amount of time. There is no limit to the number of players we can have on our roster, so if the entire team wants to do this, that's fine. (If it turns out that  we have "too many" people which does not allow anyone enough playing time,  then I will simply make a "non-playing" schedule, and for each game,  a couple of players will, in turn, be designated as not coming to a game!
For those on the team, who also play basketball or hockey during the Winter - and that is usually a number of the team, having a large roster means that there is usually no problem of the team being able to field enough players, if there is a scheduling conflict between the sports.
The cost is about $50 per person per session. (The cost for the team is $550 per session (two sessions). ( I pay Corner Kick, and you, hopefully, reimburse me!)  The  per person cost obviously depends on how many people sign up. If 10 people sign up, the cost would be $55 per person, per session. If 15 sign up, it would be something like $35 per person, per session.

If you are interested in playing either or both sessions, please let me know at Macmoish@aol.com. You don't need to give me money yet, or fill in any forms.

GLEN'S PRACTICE/PARTY

On  SATURDAY, October 16: Glen held a practice and party at his house. Many Thanks Glen!

RAIN THWARTS POSSIBLE TOURNAMENT VICTORY

Over the Columbus Day Weekend, MSC STRIKERS took part in the Sterling Youth Soccer Association's 20th Annual Mid-Atlantic Columbus Day Tournament in Northern Virginia.  In their two games, Strikers defeated Stafford Storm 2-0 (half-time 1-0)   before beating Shennadoah United 4-3 (half-time 1-0) in a game, which will probably be long remembered.
A third scheduled game which would have determined whether Strikers played in the final was cancelled because of bad weather.
Thanks to everyone who brought stuff for the inter-game period. Thanks especially, to Karin and Laura for arranging the games, which the boys really liked, and for bringing the tables and chairs. And of course thanks, for arranging for the team to play in the tournament!

MATCH SUMMARIES

STRIKERS  2: VYS UNITED 3

On  Sunday, November 7, MSC Strikers lost 3-2 to VYS United on a very windy day.   At half time, VYS United were leading 1-0. Strikers equalized in the second half.  VYS went 3-1 before Strikers pulled 1 back.

STRIKERS GO DOWN AGAINST RESTON

In what was really a "shock defeat," MSC Strikers went down 2-7 against bottom of the table Reston Vikings. This was the first time Strikers had conceded more than 2 goals in over a year.

STRIKERS SLIP UP AGAINST OLNEY

On Sunday, September 26, MSC Strikers lost 1-0 to Olney United, conceding a goal from a freekick, midway through the second half. After a shaky first ten minutes, Strikers had dominated much of the first half, but failed to score. In the second half, until the goal, Strikers looked like they had a good chance of getting a result.

STRIKERS GO DOWN 0-1 TO NEW LEADERS

MSC Strikers lost 0-1 to the new Division 2 leaders, FESC, in a game played at FESC, on Saturday, Sept. 25..   Strikers conceded a goal in the second half as . FESC took their run of consecutive victories to something like 15.

STRIKERS TIE 2-2 AGAINST DIVISION LEADERS

On Sunday, September 19, MSC Strikers tied 2:2 against Division 2 leaders, GRFL Thunderbolts (halftime 1-1).   In the first half, Strikers went ahead after about 15 minutes after experiencing a lot of Thunderbolts pressure. After scoring, Strikers came close to getting a second. Just seconds before half time, Thunderbolts equalized from a free kick just outside the Strikers penalty area.      In the second half, both sides had a number of chances, before Thunderbolts went ahead after about 10 minutes.  Strikers equalized from the penalty spot,  about 5 minutes from time.    This was the first time Strikers had tied a game since the Spring of 1998.

STRIKERS WIN OPENING GAME 6-0!

MSC STRIKERS won their opening game, September 12, 6-0 away to DC Devils with 3 goals in each half.  MSC STRIKERS went ahead in the first minute; were 2-0 after 5 minutes and  3-0 within 15 minutes.  Three more goals followed in the second half, in a game which the DC Devils, despite the scoreline, never gave up trying till the very last kick.

THE REST OF THE SEASON

A PURELY PERSONAL VIEW

Regardless of the reasons for the current predicament of MSC Strikers -- and one can always look back at each game, and say, "if only" -- as the latest standings show, Strikers face a major problem. (One should alway bear in mind that, ultimately, this is only a game, and that our 11 and 12 year olds are continuing to develop and learn lessons even in adversity.)

Since there are numerous permutations depending on results between the other teams,  there are no certainties about what number of points are needed to stay up. Realistically, two victories, from our last four games should ensure Division 2 soccer, next season. (Promotion to Division 1 is no longer an option!)

Our next three games are against teams who are currently fighting to ensure that the they will not be one of the three teams going down: SWYA Galaxy;  STAF Storm; and  DAMA Tornados. Our final game is then against VYS United, who are currently one of the three teams challenging for the two promotion places.

Obviously recriminations or regret about past games is pointless - beyond learning from them, and clearly everyone on the team is trying extremely hard.  What  we have to do is focus on the next four games, and look to the Strikers  playing as we know that they can play. Some things, obviously Strikers have no control over: games we've already played; the results of other matches; refereeing decisions we may disagree with; bad luck; or ultimately, if another team is, on the day, even more brilliant than us, at our best.

All that can be done is to look to what is each of our own hands - players and parents - to maximize the possibility for success in our games for the rest of the season.   If after doing all that we can do, it is not enough, then so be it.  After three great seasons, this season will hopefully prove to be a blip, and next season MSC Strikers will be restored to its old successful ways.  (Speaking obviously only for my son on the team, however this season ends,  we will be kicking off next season, with MSC Strikers).

If anyone has any comments on this matter, that they wish placed on this site, please e-mail them to me at: Macmoish@aol.com

Parents and Players of MSC STRIKERS should check the ANNOUNCEMENTS & UPDATES section of this site for complete details of news and announcements concerning MSC STRIKERS games, practices and events. For the most up-to-the minute, Strikers announcements,  continue to call the Strikers information line.

A few weekends ago, Jim Dempsey put together a trip for most members of the team (and parents) to go see a soccer game at the University of Maryland, which they greatly enjoyed.

FINAL STANDINGS

Top Two Teams Go Up -- Bottom Three Teams Go Down

FINAL STANDINGS IF POINTS TIE

In the case of point ties at the end of the regularly scheduled season, final division standings for any teams involved will be determined on the basis of the following tiebreaker sequence:   a) Head-to-head result between the two teams or among the three, four, or five teams involved.

(With several other key games to come, thus far the situation is: If DC Devils and Strikers finish on equal points; Strikers are higher placed. If Strikers and Reston Vikings finish on equal points; Reston are higher placed. If Strikers and Olney finish on equal points, Olney place higher.)

     (b) Most wins during the season. (c) Greatest differential between goals for and goals against. (d) Fewest goals allowed during the season. (e) Fewest red cards (f) Coin toss.
